PlayUrb - Results!

Transforming Cities into Smart Playgrounds for Urban Sports


LINES by CityLegends, in partnership with the cities of Eindhoven, Valencia, Munich and Turin, launched the PlayUrb project to encourage urban sports and culture with digital tools and local policy initiatives.

What is PlayUrb?

PlayUrb is an innovative grassroots sports program that connects the digital and physical worlds of urban sports. Through the power of digital platforms, physical events, and policy-oriented insights, PlayUrb aims to activate young people and support cities in creating vibrant and inclusive sports environments.

 

PlayUrb focuses on four core objectives:

Exploring the urban sports scene in European cities.

Encouraging young people to actively participate in urban sports.

Strengthening local communities and measuring impact.

Sharing successful strategies with other EU cities.


What did we achieve?

The PlayUrb project has reached important milestones and created impact on multiple levels:

 

1. Urban Sports Activation & Outreach

More than 22,000 youngsters participated in urban sports competitions (original goal: 10,000).

4,000+ participants in physical events, despite unforeseen weather conditions. 10 million+ online interactions through the CityLegends platform and social media campaigns (goal: 200,000).

80% satisfaction score among the participants of activities.

 

2.  Events & Urban Activation

🏙️ Eindhoven & Turin: Successful events with 2,000+ participants per city.

🌧️ Munich: Despite partial cancellation due to bad weather still 1,000+ participants.

🌊 Valencia: Event unfortunately completely cancelled due to extreme weather conditions (DANA).

3. Digital Innovation & Urban Data

📊 City Dashboard launched - real-time insights into urban sports activity in public spaces.

📍 Interactive urban maps by city with sports spots, jams and events.

🎮 Gamification of public spaces through digital engagement, resulting in increased participation.

4.  Sustainable Impact & Collaborations

🤝 Over 50 stakeholders involved in urban sports policies and events.

💃 140+ participants at the PlayUrb Summit, plus 8 online participants.

💡 New collaborations and policy initiatives established with:

  • Eindhoven & Torino: Researching new urban urban sports strategies.

  • EPSI & CityLegends: Application for EU funds for further growth.

  • URBNS Valencia & CityLegends: Ongoing activations and events.

  • Innovationmanufaktur München: Regional and national expansion of urban sports infrastructure.
